1.4 Million Medical Records Destroyed by Fire

August 17th, 2010

When it comes to real-world examples of how important ERM (Electronic Records Management) is, we can either tell you horror stories of irreplaceable documents being lost, or sing the praises of data being preserved in spite of a disaster. In the case of The University of New Mexico Hospital, we can do both.

In Albuquerque, a warehouse storing medical files for UNM Hospital caught fire near the end of July, 2010. For days, firefighters battled the flames–it’s believed that nearly 40% of the patient records were destroyed during the initial incineration.

Even after it was extinguished, the fire rekindled several days later, destroying even more valuable information.

Hospital Executive Director Catherine Porto said that since 2005, the hospital has switched to an electronic system, minimizing the number of patient-care complaints as a result of the disaster. However, patients who have since made requests for pre-2005 files are being informed of their destruction.

Porto also said that files housed in another warehouse are now being scanned to electronic format.

In 2005, UNM Hospital began the conversion project which, in retrospect, was an invaluable investment in their process. If they had waited a few more years to get started, what would have been the outcome? How many more records could have been lost? In five years, will your business be facing a disaster that will compromise your records? Let’s hope not, but just to be safe, give us a call.

ValleyCats Lunch and Learn

August 13th, 2010

Wow! What a fun way to do business! We spent the afternoon at the Joseph L. Bruno stadium in Troy, watching the ValleyCats play and doing product demonstrations for Kodak scanners and Capture Pro, and Cabinet NG.

Steve Crabb from Cabinet NG demos CNG-SAFE.

With over a dozen area businesses in attendance, the Visitor Suite was full. Fortunately, all of the boxes have a few rows of balcony seating outside.

Ed Canary and Jason Abare of E-BizDocs watch the game from the balcony seating.

Howard Gross, owner of E-BizDocs, threw out the first ball to start the game, then hurried back to the suite to answer questions about using less paper in the office, how to scan documents to electronic format, and Electronic Records Management in general.

We had a great time, and look forward to seeing everyone at the next event!
