The vulnerability of paper documents is no small problem. Aside from the damage that comes from daily use, there are any number of events that could wipe out years of documents in no time. Here are a couple recent examples.

Plumbing Failure

This week in Gladwin County, Michigan, a court building suffered water damage due to plumbing failure.

A coil in the heating system broke and leaked through three floors. Ceiling tiles collapsed, carpets were ruined, and more tragically, many records were soaked.

In the Town of Ashland, NY, the municipal building housingTown offices, the Town Court and the town’s fire department, was itself engulfed in flames in early 2010. While no cause was immediately determined, the effect was immeasurable. Firefighting apparatuses, vehicles, as well as historical items were destroyed.

Justine Koehler, the Town Clerk, said some court documents and files from the town’s records room had been saved along with 13 filing cabinets from her office. Firefighters formed a chain to remove as many files from the burning building as possible.
